| Abstract | The presence of limited healthcare resources may greatly influence the spread of the disease and its persistence since the demand for treatment may exceed available healthcare resources. In this study, a mathematical model is presented to understand the dynamics of infectious diseases in a constrained resource environment. The compartmental model is built by dividing the population into compartments of susceptible, infected, hospitalized, and recovered individuals. The healthcare capacity is introduced in the treatment and hospitalization processes of the disease. First, the model is analyzed to prove that its solutions are non-negative and bounded, as well as to find equilibrium points of the disease-free and endemic types. The basic reproduction number is derived in order to know the thresholds of the disease development. After that, local stability conditions are investigated. Results of the analysis are used to show that lack of treatment and hospitalization resources may change the qualitative character of the infectious disease dynamics. |
