| Abstract | Tobacco and alcohol use are significant behavioural risk factors with large public health and socio-spatial implications. The current study aims to analyze the spatial distribution, gender disparities and socio-demographic association of tobacco and alcohol consumption in the 36 districts of Maharashtra, India. The analysis was done separately for male and female using district level estimates from the National Family Health Survey-5 (NFHS-5) 2019-21. Thematic and bivariate choropleth mapping, Global Moran's I, Pearson's correlation, Spearman's rank correlation and multivariable regression were used in the study. Four main indicators were explored: tobacco use by women and men aged 15 years and older, and alcohol use by women and men aged 15 years and older. The results show significant differences in consumption patterns across space and between men and women. There was significant positive spatial autocorrelation for women's tobacco consumption (Moran's I = 0.0803, p = 0.0020), men's tobacco consumption (I = 0.1690, p = 0.0001) and men's alcohol consumption (I = 0.1327, p = 0.0001), but not for women's alcohol consumption. Pearson's correlation showed positive correlation between tobacco and alcohol consumption among women (r = 0.5631, p = 0.0004) and men (r = 0.6572, p < 0.001). Spearman’s correlation was significant among men (ρ = 0.4867, p = 0.0026) but not women (ρ = 0.3143, p = 0.0619). Overall, regression models with selected socio-demographic and household indicators were not statistically significant. The results indicate the need for spatial and gender perspectives to understand behavioural health risks in Maharashtra. |
