Reflections of Feminism in the Literary Works of Zhao Shuli and Ashapurna Devi

Author(s) Chiranjib Sinha
Country India
Abstract This article compares the literary works of Ashapurna Devi and Zhao Shuli from a feminist perspective, highlighting how both writers portray women’s struggles within the patriarchal societies of India and China. Both writers are important figures of twentieth-century social realism and focus on ordinary people and everyday life. Although they wrote in very different political contexts, revolutionary China and colonial/post-colonial Bengal,India, they both show how marriage and family life become spaces of control and oppression for women. Zhao Shuli presents women’s liberation as a public and legal process supported by socialist laws and collective action. Ashapurna Devi, on the other hand, highlights the silent psychological and intellectual suffering of women inside middle-class households, where resistance begins through education, self-awareness, and inner strength. By examining marriage, the in-laws’ house, the role of the mother-in-law, and the attitude of husbands, this article argues that while Zhao Shuli imagines liberation as social success, Ashapurna Devi presents it as a painful and often incomplete struggle.
Despite the different time periods and socio-political conditions of these Indian and Chinese novels, they show how patriarchy operates in much the same way everywhere. This study explores the lives of the main characters, focusing on their personal struggles and the social realities they face. Together, their works show that the home itself becomes the most important site of social and feminist conflict.
The methodology of this study is analytical. It also uses a comparative approach to examine the similarities and differences in their writings on women.
