Abstract Microfinance institutions (MFIs) have emerged as significant instruments for financial inclusion and socio‑economic development in rural areas. By providing access to small credit, savings facilities, and entrepreneurial support, MFIs empower women who traditionally face barriers in accessing formal financial systems. This study examines the role of microfinance institutions in enhancing economic and social empowerment among rural women with special reference to Manjeri Municipality in Kerala. The research adopts a descriptive design and utilizes both primary and secondary data. Primary data were collected from women beneficiaries of microfinance programmes through structured questionnaires. The findings reveal that microfinance significantly contributes to women’s financial independence, entrepreneurial development, and participation in household decision‑making. The study concludes that strengthening microfinance programmes and financial literacy initiatives can further enhance women empowerment and rural development.
